The state of our health care system

Posted in Medicine at 10:55 am by The Lizard Queen

So, a cat can get Prozac online, but a woman suffering from extreme pain caused by fibromyalgia can’t get a bed in a hospital. And yet somehow there are still people out there who claim there’s nothing wrong with our health care system. Go figure.

(Hat tip to Gina for the cat story.)

Wow, Liz, I got to the end of the NPR article — 36 bullet points!!! So why was I counting them rather than deciding whether all this is part of the problem or part of the solution? Because there are such simple solutions, like everyone has to sign up for Kaiser. But then no one would ever get admitted to a Kaiser hospital just for fibromyalgia. People have to decide what they really want, only I think the majority of Americans are already getting what they want, including the neglect of the poor. That Americans lie about this is a different issue.

I think you’re absolutely right on that point.

Obviously you’d know more about this than I, but at the same time the idea of having everyone sign up for Kaiser (for example) doesn’t sit well with me, because it gives an awful lot of power to a single corporation, and it seems to me like it would be easy for that power to be abused. Still, if it meant easily accessible health care for the poor…
