Thursday YouTubein’ — Smells Like Teen Spirit

Posted in Music at 9:37 pm by The Lizard Queen

I’m thinking I’ll try to make Thursday YouTubein’ a weekly tradition as well. I heard this song on the radio yesterday and was reminded of just how well it’s holding up, 16 years later. It was one of the first cassette singles I ever purchased, never guessing what brilliance I was capturing with my hard-earned babysitting money.

Tori Amos performs the song in the following video — this is how I was able to learn the bulk of the lyrics:

And finally, Weird Al Yankovic’s version: “Smells Like Nirvana.” I once heard a story that I hope is true: Nirvana (or at least one member thereof) was excited by the idea that Weird Al wanted to do a parody of them, because they (he) felt like it meant they’d made it. (It’s a striking contrast to Coolio’s reaction to “Amish Paradise.”)

It is hard to bargle nawdle zous… (Dick Van Patten and the tuba were both nice touches.)

Can’t say I know the original song at all well, but I have incredibly fond memories of Weird Al’s treatment. End of 9th grade. Good times.

Tori Amos does such justice to that song. I love when she performs it.
