Thursday YouTubein’ — Bruce Springsteen

Okay, so maybe I was more waxing nostalgic last week than actually making a point; obviously there isn’t much to the following video (chosen in honor of Independence Day). I do like the shots of soldiers and vets toward the end, though — I find them telling, as I would perhaps call this an anti-war but pro-individual-soldier song. [For contrast, here’s the interpretation of a YouTube commenter: “This is most definitely NOT an anti-war song….its a song about a Vietnam Vet who returned to America expecting to be treated like a king and realized he has to work for a living like the rest of us. Some Vietnam vets came home and got free college educations thanks to the GI bill…and others just became bums who expected to be pampered for rest of their lives.” Uh-huh… right.]

Here’s a track from almost 20 years later, one that I think explores similar themes (and of which I’m similarly fond). [One interpretation, from Wikipedia: “The title track is about a soldier in a war, assumed to be an American one who had participated in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq or the subsequent occupation.”]

  1. Cara said,

Um yeah, “Born in the USA” is not, in part, an anti-war song just like Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer” is not, in part, about fucking.
