Too late to be known as George the first, he’s sure to be known as George the worst…

Liss posted President Bush’s latest bit of Congress-scolding earlier today; I just wanted to respond to one paragraph (because if I tried to respond to more, it would likely descend into me making rabid cat noises at the computer, because I just plain can’t stand the man):

In fairness, Congress was not entirely out over the past two weeks. In a political maneuver designed to block my ability to make recess appointments, . . .

Okay, here’s the thing: the idea behind the ability to make recess appointments in the first place is that if someone resigns suddenly while Congress is at recess, the President can appoint someone to fill the vacant position so that the government can continue to run smoothly.  The idea was not that the President would just wait until Congress went to recess to appoint someone so they wouldn’t have to go through the approval process.  Bush getting all snarky because Congress won’t let him make an ethically fuzzy move he feels he’s entitled to make gets on my nerves.

. . . congressional leaders arranged for a senator to come in every three days or so, bang a gavel, wait for about 30 seconds, bang a gavel again, and then leave. Under the Senate rules, this counts as a full day. If 30 seconds is a full day, no wonder Congress has got a lot of work to do.

This from the President who back in August was on track to break Reagan’s record for number of vacation days taken in office?  That’s rich.
